Birds of a Feather:
Adopted as Fraternity’s mascot in 1987, the penguin has been a prominent fixture in Theta Phi Alpha for the past 35 years. Penguins symbolize loyalty and affinity, mating for life and returning to the same partner year after year. Their friendliness and dedication to their mate and community makes them a perfect symbol for Theta Phi Alphas from North to South, East to West.
We introduce you to Birds of a Feather. From the Russian River Valley AVA of Sonoma County, this beautiful wine is influenced mostly by the fog of the AVA and is very aromatic, with a velvet mouthfeel, and has a fruit character that is ripe and intense.
Pearl:
Added as the second official jewel in 1920, the pearl has great meaning to Theta Phi Alpha, being the main feature of our membership badge. The pearl is a treasured jewel, requiring no special cutting or polishing to maximize its beauty, making it treasured in its original form. Nineteen pearls sit atop a gold Theta, over the Phi and the Alpha, giving meaning to many areas within the Fraternity.
We introduce you to Pearl. This Chardonnay is a real gem. Hailing from the cool and foggy climate for the Russian River Valley in Sonoma County, this beautiful medium-bodied wine was grown slowly to build intense flavors over time. This wine was aged in French oak and displays a beautiful balance of fruit, oak and liveliness on the palate and exhibits lush mango and toasted almond. Balanced fruit with tarte acidity makes this wine a classic example of Premium Russian River Chardonnay.
Ms. Helen:
Ms. Helen is the fourth of ten releases in the Founders' series. The Founders' series honors the legacy of Theta Phi Alpha's Founders, who, in their desire to establish an organization that supported women at the University of Michigan, cultivated a sisterhood that thrives today.
Helen Ryan Quinlan was a quintessential woman of grace, influence, and service, with philanthropy a hallmark of her character. A 1908 UM alumna, founding a sorority was a priority and a passion for Helen. She traveled to Ann Arbor from Cleveland first to consider the possibilities with her friends, the fellow Founders, then organize, and with the first initiation, bring Theta Phi Alpha into being. A loving wife and mother and a loyal member, her many gifts of organization and service on both the national and local scale shaped her philanthropic life and the mark that she made is gratefully recalled today.
We introduce you to Ms. Helen. Our flagship Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is a classic representation of the appellation’s preeminent varietal. Notes of black cherry, blackberry and plum are complemented by hits of toasted oak, dried currant and baking spice. Fine-grained tannins and ample brightness on the palate give way to a polished mouthfeel and exceptionally long finish.
1912 Reserve:
Founded in 1912, Theta Phi Alpha celebrates a long history of everlasting sisterhood, established by our ten valiant Founders. This premium sparkling wine is crafted using the centuries-old “Méthode Champenoise” and draws inspiration from the courage and leadership that brought Theta Phi Alpha into being in 1912.
We introduce you to 1912 Reserve. This premium sparkling wine – meticulously and artfully made in the traditional champagne method – rivals anything found from the best Champagne houses in Épernay and Reims. Blended superbly from Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, this magnificent Napa Valley Brut exhibits rich fruit aromatics of strawberry and delicate white cherry that follows through to a creamy mid-palate accompanied with highlights of lime and wet minerality and a lingering vibrant finish.
Ms. May:
How does one imagine a Theta Phi Alpha without the enduring contributions of May Cecilia Ryan, which include the fraternity’s name, motto, and first crest? May graduated from the University of Michigan in 1895 and was the Head of the Latin Department for Toledo Public Schools. She was elected to the inaugural Board of Trustees for a four-year term, and with her sister, Camilla, opened their homes for a joint meeting of the Grand Council and the Board of Trustees to craft a plan for improved fraternity health in 1931. May died on May 18, 1935, following an extended illness, and was laid to rest at the Saint Thomas Catholic Cemetery in Ann Arbor.
We introduce you to Ms. May. This captivating red wine showcases a deep, dark hue, hinting at aromas of damson plum, fig, roasted chestnut, and a lively herbal essence. On the palate, it opens with vibrant, juicy fruit-forward notes before unfolding into layers of baking spices and rich dark fruits. Full-bodied and well-structured, it carries through to a smooth, lingering finish.
Memphis:
From Elvis’ “Blue Suede Shoes” to over 100 barbecue joints serving up the best ribs in town, Memphis is home to many iconic landmarks, food, and activities, including Theta Phi Alpha’s 2022 National Convention! With a stay at The Peabody and their five resident ducks, our members enjoyed a visit at the National Civil Rights Museum, traditional Memphis barbecue on Beale Street, and all of the great memories that National Convention has to offer.
We introduce you to Memphis, our 2021 Rosé of Cabernet Sauvignon. The watermelon and strawberry notes burst out of the glass. When served cool on a warm day, the juicy acidity of the 2021 Rosé makes for a very refreshing and versatile wine, perfect to share on any occasion. Look for the hidden imagery in the rose petals.
