Wine Information:

White Pine:

Maine, the founding place of Sigma Kappa Sorority, is known as The Pine Tree State. The eastern white pine is the official tree and is tall and hardy, some living over 200 years, and exhibiting a sturdiness and longevity shared by Sigma Kappa herself. We can imagine our Founders sitting beneath the shade of the white pine on sunny Maine days discussing the creation of Sigma Kappa.

Sigma Kappa Elydia Foss Shipman, Alpha, never forgot her Colby roots and wrote about ‘pine trees on a hill’ in her poem “Memory”. She was the impetus for the first Sigma Kappa extension outside of Maine – the Delta Chapter at Boston University.

We introduce you to our White Pine Pinot Noir. From the Russian River Valley AVA of Sonoma County, this beautiful wine is influenced mostly by the fog of the AVA and is very aromatic, with a velvet mouthfeel, and has a fruit character that is ripe and intense.

The Sweetest Flower:

Named after a formal meeting song, “The Sweetest Flower” refers to the wild purple violet, which is the official flower of Sigma Kappa. The sweet-scented flower symbolizes truth and loyalty, while also embodying a sense of modesty, wisdom and humility. Our Founders enjoyed the wild purple violets that grew along the banks of the Messalonskee River where they often walked while planning and dreaming of Sigma Kappa.

We introduce to you The Sweetest Flower. This Chardonnay is a real gem. Hailing from the cool and foggy climate for the Russian River Valley in Sonoma County, this beautiful medium-bodied wine was grown slowly to build intense flavors over time. This wine was aged in French oak and displays a beautiful balance of fruit, oak and liveliness on the palate and exhibits lush mango and toasted almond. Balanced fruit with tarte acidity makes this wine a classic example of Premium Russian River Chardonnay.

Louise Helen Coburn:

The second wine in the First Five Series is in honor of Louise Helen Coburn. She was one of the first five women to be admitted to Colby College and the second woman to graduate. Louise was a scholar, writer and poet who wrote much of the Initiation ceremony. She firmly believed Sigma Kappa would grow beyond her dreams and lived to see those dreams realized. Her family has a strong heritage of Sigma Kappa membership, with multiple generations of female relatives joining our Sorority.

We introduce you to Louise Helen Coburn. This 2019 Red Wine is an artful red blend created by winemaker Todd Heth. This wine exhibits dark blackberry, bing cherry and plum notes perfectly into layers of coffee and tobacco. The finish is dry with long lasting berry fruit. Silky but firm tannins, this wine is enjoyable now but has the ability to age well in the cellar.

Mystic Bond:

Our Mystic Bond Reserve brut sparkling was created to celebrate the best of times with our sisters. The Mystic Bond defines the connection all Sigma Kappa members share. A bond that transcends time, linking our Founders and Sigma Kappas past and present. It’s in this bond that Sigma Kappa members strive for a balance of social, spiritual and intellectual excellence, motivated to become the best versions of ourselves.

We introduce to you Mystic Bond. This premium sparkling wine – meticulously and artfully made in the traditional champagne method – rivals anything found from the best Champagne houses in Épernay and Reims. Blended superbly from Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, this magnificent Napa Valley Brut exhibits rich fruit aromatics of strawberry and delicate white cherry that follows through to a creamy mid-palate accompanied with highlights of lime and wet minerality and a lingering vibrant finish.

1874 Reserve:

Sigma Kappa’s story began in 1874. At Colby College in Waterville, Maine, our courageous Founders bonded together as the first women admitted to college in New England. They were boldly determined to carve out a place in what had traditionally been a space reserved for men. The trail they blazed inspired the formation of sororities on the basis of scholarship, friendship, mutual interests and ideals. Here’s to Mary Low, Elizabeth Hoag, Ida Mabel Fuller, Louise Coburn and Frances Mann who created a better environment for future generations of women.

We introduce you to our flagship Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, 1874 Reserve. This is a premium and classic representation of the appellation’s preeminent varietal. Notes of black cherry, blackberry and plum are complemented by hints of toasted oak, dried currant and baking spice. Fine-grained tannins and ample brightness on the palate give way to a polished mouthfeel and exceptionally long finish.

Service:

“[Sigma Kappa] would draw together and hold in her encircling bond those only who have an earnestness of purpose, a sincerity of desire, a will to seek for opportunities of doing good
for service is her watchword and helpfulness her aim.”
– Mary Low Carver, Alpha, 1907.

Sigma Kappas are bound by a promise to give of their time, ideas and resources to benefit the common good. Service has been a foundational ideal of the Sorority since the beginning, and Sigma Kappa members develop the qualities of unselfish leadership through service while benefiting their campuses, communities and the world at large.

We introduce you to our elegant Service Cuvée Blanc. This is an alluring and complex white wine blend, with a sensuous offering of tropical fruits, white flowers and subtle spice. The nose is like a bouquet of flowers and jumps from the glass with ripe lemon, white peach and orange blossom followed by notes of toast and white pepper. On the tongue, lemon bursts forward with pineapple and other tropical fruit, with undertones of vanilla. The finish is bright and zingy and mellows with vanilla and subtle spices in its length.
