Wine Information:
Traveller:
Born in 1857 and previously named “Greenbrier,” Traveller was a grey American Saddlebred of 16 hands (64 inches). In spring of 1861, Lee first took notice of Traveller in then western Virginia. In 1865, he purchased Traveller for $200 and gave him his final name. He was a horse of great stamina, speed, and strength. While accompanying Lee to Washington College, he lost many tail hairs from students wanting a souvenir. He died in 1871. The stable where he lived his last days, directly connected to the Lee House on campus, traditionally stands with its doors left open; this is said to allow his spirit to wander freely. Enjoy a glass of Traveller with friends and brothers and let your spirits wander freely in brotherhood and camaraderie.
We introduce you to Traveller. Our Pinot Noir from Santa Barbara County experiences a lengthy and cool growing season that is similar to the climate of the Burgundy region of east-central France. Unlike Burgundy, our Pinot Noir experiences dense fog that rolls in off the Pacific Ocean; this fog contributes to the ideal climate for Pinot Noir, offering just enough moisture to be beneficial without lingering too long.
Traveller has aromas of cherries, raspberries, blackberries, and brown sugar with notes of baking spices. On the palate, the wine opens with bright, fruit flavors of strawberries, leading to a round mouthfeel on the mid-palate and soft, velvety tannins on a long, elegant finish.
Old Gold:
In 1885, the Thirteenth Convention held in Nashville, Tennessee approved Crimson and Old Gold as the Order’s official colors. They represent the blood (Crimson) and treasure (Old Gold) spent by our forefathers in defense of our country. Our brotherhood is our treasure, and we know it is stronger than ever.
We introduce you to Old Gold. From the chalky soil of the Carneros region in southern Napa Valley, this gem exhibits lush green apple and bright grapefruit notes while dancing across your palate. This stunning wine is light and friendly with very subtle vanilla and pear blossom hints on the nose. Balanced fruit with tarte acidity makes this wine a classic example of Premium Napa Chardonnay.
Founders Red - William Nelson Scott:
Scott’s spirit of brotherhood was present in three seminal moments in early KA history: he was one-half of the subject for James Ward Wood’s toast, “to the two Williams,” on December 21, 1865, he was the first Number I of Old Alpha at the first meetings in the Order’s history, and, he presided over the initiation ceremonies of Samuel Zenas Ammen. Ammen later recalled, “I have never seen any in equal to him in charm of voice, in solemnity of manner, in dignity of demeanor, or in general impressiveness…” Scott’s careful regard for others was present as a Presbyterian minister in Galveston, Texas, as he comforted those affected by the Great Hurricane and Flood of 1900. Founder Scott’s “general impressiveness” paved the way to KA’s known high standard of conduct—to him we can all salute.
We introduce you to Founders Red - William Nelson Scott. The 2019 Red Wine is an artful red blend created by winemaker Todd Heth. This wine exhibits dark blackberry, bing cherry and plum notes perfectly into layers of coffee and tobacco. The finish is dry with long lasting berry fruit. Silky but firm tannins, this wine is enjoyable now but has the ability to age well in the cellar.
Excelsior:
The motto, Excelsior, reminds KAs to strive for excellence in all things and to never settle for mediocrity. What better name to make a KA proud and what better way to celebrate any great accomplishment than with a bottle bearing this brave device.
We introduce you to Excelsior. This premium sparkling wine – meticulously and artfully made in the traditional champagne method – rivals anything found from the best Champagne houses in Épernay and Reims. Blended superbly with 100% Pinot Noir, this magnificent Napa Valley Blanc de Noirs exhibits rich fruit aromatics of strawberry and delicate white cherry that follows through to a creamy mid-palate accompanied with highlights of lime and wet minerality and a lingering vibrant finish.
Crimson Rose:
The Crimson Rose, one of the Order’s two official flowers, is introduced to its newest members in the Induction Ceremony. While it signifies many things, last, but far from least, its beauty and fragrance are symbolic of the real affection and strong abiding friendship which characterize us as sworn brothers, striving together for one common objective and purpose, the promulgation of philosophy of Kappa Alpha Order—a spirit which will make men better and the world a brighter place in which to work and live. Pour a glass of Crimson Rose and solve the world’s problems to embody that brighter place for all men and women.
We introduce you to Crimson Rose. This flagship Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is a classic representation of the appellation’s preeminent varietal. Notes of black cherry, blackberry and plum are complemented by hits of toasted oak, dried currant and baking spice. Fine-grained tannins and ample brightness on the palate give way to a polished mouthfeel and exceptionally long finish.
Kappa Alpha Rosé:
“She has two dreamy eyes of blue, a smile beyond compare...” These words are known by all KAs as the opening lyrics from “Kappa Alpha Rose”, our sweetheart song. This Kappa Alpha Rosé wine is for both you and your KA Rose. Expect lovely notes of watermelon and strawberry to burst out of the glass with every sip. When served cool on a warm day, the Rosé makes for a very refreshing and versatile wine, perfect to share on any occasion. Pick up a glass and remember that your KA Rose is, “... the sweetest girl in all the world, the fairest flower that grows, she’s my sunny southern sweetheart, she’s my Kappa Alpha Rose!”
We introduce you to Kappa Alpha Rosé, our 2021 Rosé of Cabernet Sauvignon. The watermelon and strawberry notes burst out of the glass. When served cool on a warm day, the juicy acidity of the 2021 Rosé makes for a very refreshing and versatile wine, perfect to share on any occasion. Look for the hidden imagery in the rose petals.
