Wine Information:

Constantine:

Marching toward Rome on October 27, 312 A.D., Emperor Constantine’s forces were pursuing the armies of Maxentius, a challenger to the crown. According to legend, Constantine saw a cross in the sky before going into battle which inspired him to victory. The Sigma Chi heraldry is influenced by the legendary feat of Constantine, a man who demonstrated a remarkable commitment to an ideal.

We introduce you to Constantine. Our premium sparkling wine - meticulously and artfully made in the traditional champagne method - rivals anything found in the best Champagne houses in Épernay and Reims. Blended superbly from Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, this magnificent Napa Valley Brut exhibits rich fruit aromatics of strawberry and delicate white cherry that follow through to a creamy mid-palate accompanied with highlights of lime and wet minerality and a lingering vibrant finish. Constantine Brut should be shared during all of life’s great victories. In Hoc Signo Vinces!

Norman Shield:

From the beginning of Roman history, soldiers used two basic types of shields: the great scutum, in either its oval or rectangular form and the round bronze clypeus. It was not until the 12th century that Europe saw a new type of kite-shaped shield that became known as the Norman style.

Since arms were originally painted on shields, it is now a basic part of any coat of arms. Our Norman Shield represents friendship, justice, and learning. While friends can have a profound impact on our experiences in life, this wine aspires to develop brotherhood - a deeper and more enduring type of friendship found only in the bond of the battlefield and a full goblet of wine post-victory.

Our 2020 Norman Shield Pinot Noir is from the Russian River Valley AVA of Sonoma County. This beautiful wine is influenced mostly by the fog of the AVA and is very aromatic, with a velvet mouthfeel, and has a fruit character that is ripe and intense.

The Duke:

Honesty. Courage. Trustworthiness. These words have become synonymous with the name of Significant Sig John Wayne, SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA 1929. “The Duke” was tough and he was honorable, ready to laugh and share a drink with a brother, and always ready to do what men had to do in order to see justice done.

He didn’t ask you to like him. He asked you to live up to him. Brother Wayne is perhaps one of the Fraternity’s most famous and beloved alumni, not only because of those values that he portrayed onscreen and offscreen, but because he gave so much of himself to the Fraternity.

“Men join fraternities, leaders of men join Sigma Chi“ – John Wayne

We introduce you to The Duke. A limited-production, The Duke Cab's tremendous full-body structure and balance are the essence of Mount Veeder, known as the source of some of Napa Valley's most extraordinary mountain-grown wines. Concentrated fruit flavors and integrated tannins introduce a balance of complex, sophisticated aromatics and fruit intensity. Notes of cassis, lingonberry, black cherry, and crushed cocoa come to the forefront, with hints of violets, thyme, black tea, and kirsch all layer on a bed of velvety tannin.

The Sweetheart:

The second release of "The Sweetheart" Chardonnay is a real gem. Hailing from the cool and foggy climate of the Russian River Valley in Sonoma County, this beautiful medium-bodied wine was grown slowly to build intense flavors over time. This wine was aged in French oak and displays a beautiful balance of fruit, oak, and liveliness on the palate and exhibits lush mango and toasted almond. Balanced fruit with tart acidity makes this wine a classic example of Premium Russian River Chardonnay.

The Sweetheart is the symbol of the spiritual ingredient in the brotherhood, and we hope this wine will be shared amongst friends and family in the same sentiment. This label showcases the iconic images of the sheet music of the Sigma Chi Sweetheart Song with the hat and flower.

This bottle is signed by Jacqueline DuPont Carlson, International Sweetheart 1989-1991 (SAN DIEGO - Alpha Delta Pi).

History:

Written in 1911 by two undergraduates at Albion College in Michigan, The Sweetheart of Sigma Chi has become the most popular college fraternity song in history. Byron Stokes, 1913, wrote the words one June day while in class. He took the words to his Sigma Chi Brother Dudleigh Vernor, 1914, who was practicing the organ in the campus chapel; Vernor completed the music that day. It was first sung by Harry Clifford, ALBION 1911, who designed the drawing on the original sheet music and published by Richard Vernor, ALBION 1913, brother of Dudleigh Vernor.

Stokes was asked by many people, "Who is the girl who was the inspiration?" He answered it was no one in particular. "The `Sweetheart' is the symbol of the spiritual ingredient in brotherhood. It was the Sigma Chi Fraternity itself that inspired the song. I wrote the words not long after my initiation, and the magic of our Ritual with its poetic overtones and undertones was, I suppose, the source of my inspiration."

The White Rose:

Memory brings to me
Girls I knew and lov’d in days that used to be;
I recall best of all
One who wears the rose of Sigma Chi for me.

One white rose true love shows
Emblem of a sweetheart’s love that cannot die;
True to me, she will be
So my girl is like the rose of Sigma Chi.

Our 2020 White Rose is a Rosé of Cabernet Sauvignon. The watermelon and strawberry notes burst out of the glass. When served cool on a warm day, the juicy acidity of the 2019 White Rose makes for a very refreshing and versatile wine to share on any occasion. Look for the hidden imagery in the rose petals.

Integrity:

The Founders Red Series commemorates the seven young men who wanted something better in a fraternity during their collegiate experience. From that recognition, a dream was born - the fraternity of Sigma Chi. This wine is the second of a seven-year series.

William Lewis Lockwood, MIAMI (OHIO) 1858, the only one of the seven Founders who was not a member of DKE, was born in New York City and was 18 years old at the founding of Sigma Chi. He is best remembered as the businessman or organizer of the group and for bringing the element of cultural refinement. His organizational skills were primarily responsible for the survival of the Fraternity.

Of him, Benjamin Piatt Runkle, MIAMI (OHIO) 1857, recalled: “He was cultured and had been partly educated in the East. He was a slender, fair-haired youth with polished manners and was always dressed in the best taste.”

After graduating in 1858, Lockwood returned to New York, studied law, and was admitted to the bar in 1860. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he fought for the North, where he became a first lieutenant and later a captain. He greatly distinguished himself in battle but suffered a severe shoulder wound in 1863 and never fully recovered. Unable to practice law because of his poor health, he bought the local woolen mills and formed the firm Lockwood, Alpin & Co. In 1867, he became the first of the Founders to enter the Chapter Eternal and is buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Brooklyn, New York.

The 2020 In Hoc “Integrity” Founders Red Wine is an artful red blend created by winemaker Todd Heth. This wine exhibits dark blackberry, bing cherry, and plum notes perfectly into layers of coffee and tobacco. The finish is dry with long-lasting berry fruit. Silky but firm tannins, this wine is enjoyable now but has the ability to age well in the cellar.

This bottle is signed by Michael Codina, MD, CALIFORNIA-SAN DIEGO 1993, 22nd Grand Historian.
