Wine Information:
Mary Low Carver:Â
A wine named in honor of Mary Low Carver is the first release in the First Five Series. These wines honor our five Founders and their desire to pave the way for thousands of women to come. We are grateful that these courageous women decided to make a place for women in the collegiate world. Their efforts inspired the formation of sororities on the basis of scholarship, friendship, mutual interests and ideals.
Mary Caffrey Low Carver was the first woman to attend Colby College, the first name added to the rolls of Sigma Kappa and first to preside at an Initiation. She was a brilliant student who graduated in July 1875 at 25. Mary was always interested in the future of Sigma Kappa. The early chapter members frequently consulted with her on everything from the selection of furniture to the decision to extend Sigma Kappa beyond Colby College. Mary was hard of hearing, but she read lips so quickly few recognized her deafness.
We introduce you to our First Five Series, featuring Mary Low Carver. This proprietary red blend â from our award-winning winemaker Todd Heth â exhibits dark blackberry, bing cherry and plum notes perfectly into layers of coffee and tobacco. The finish is dry with long lasting berry fruit. Silky but firm tannins, this wine is enjoyable now but has the ability to age well in the cellar.
Louise Helen Coburn:Â
The second wine in the First Five Series is in honor of Louise Helen Coburn. She was one of the first five women to be admitted to Colby College and the second woman to graduate. Louise was a scholar, writer and poet who wrote much of the Initiation ceremony. She firmly believed Sigma Kappa would grow beyond her dreams and lived to see those dreams realized. Her family has a strong heritage of Sigma Kappa membership, with multiple generations of female relatives joining our Sorority.
We introduce you to Louise Helen Coburn. This 2019 Red Wine is an artful red blend created by winemaker Todd Heth. This wine exhibits dark blackberry, bing cherry and plum notes perfectly into layers of coffee and tobacco. The finish is dry with long lasting berry fruit. Silky but firm tannins, this wine is enjoyable now but has the ability to age well in the cellar.
Elizabeth Gorham Hoag:Â
The third wine in the First Five Series pays tribute to Elizabeth Gorham Hoag. Elizabeth was artistic and loved languages and literature and was an accomplished pianist. Friends described her as joyous and full of fun, regularly seeing the bright side of things and quick to respond with a witty comment. Sadly, Elizabeth died at the age of 18 from tuberculosis. She lived long enough to attend the first Initiation ceremony, Feb. 17, 1875, and passed away in June the same year. Her contributions to the formation of Sigma Kappa were essential and organic, and the Sorority owes much of its brand personality to her bright ideas and level judgement.
We introduce you to Elizabeth Gorham Hoag. Our proprietary red blend always exhibits the craft of blending, where all the parts complement the round character of the final wine. Deep dark saturated color, with spicy plum and black cherry, tobacco, cinnamon, and floral and camphor hints on the nose while on the palate it is voluptuous, dark fruited, juicy, round and long lasting with currant, dark chocolate, roasted beets and a persistent finish in this full-bodied wine.
Ida Fuller Pierce:Â
The fourth wine in the First Five series pays tribute to Ida Fuller Pierce. Vigorous and dynamic as a girl, she would develop into a social-minded woman who, in her own words, refused to accept her sex as âirrefutable condemnation to a subordinate position in life.â She was lively and witty and was the practical voice in the early deliberations of the Sorority. Forced to leave college her junior year due to ill health, she remained committed to Sigma Kappa until her death in 1930.
We introduce you to Ida Fuller Pierce. Beautiful dark color from a concentrated vintage, this wine leads out with brooding dark fruit aromas of black cherry, blackberries and baking spices with some underlying clay earth and toasty oak. The palate dances with bright fruits that turn darker with time in this full-bodied wine, which is juicy and approachable now, but will also reveal other nuances with age, especially coming from a deep and heralded vintage.
