Wine Information:
Mystic Bond:
Our Mystic Bond Reserve brut sparkling was created to celebrate the best of times with our sisters. The Mystic Bond defines the connection all Sigma Kappa members share. A bond that transcends time, linking our Founders and Sigma Kappas past and present. It’s in this bond that Sigma Kappa members strive for a balance of social, spiritual and intellectual excellence, motivated to become the best versions of ourselves.
We introduce you to Mystic Bond. This premium sparkling wine – meticulously and artfully made in the traditional champagne method – rivals anything found from the best Champagne houses in Épernay and Reims. Blended superbly from Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, this magnificent Napa Valley Brut exhibits rich fruit aromatics of strawberry and delicate white cherry that follows through to a creamy mid-palate accompanied with highlights of lime and wet minerality and a lingering vibrant finish.
White Pine:
Maine, the founding place of Sigma Kappa Sorority, is known as The Pine Tree State. The eastern white pine is the official tree and is tall and hardy, some living over 200 years, and exhibiting a sturdiness and longevity shared by Sigma Kappa herself. We can imagine our Founders sitting beneath the shade of the white pine on sunny Maine days discussing the creation of Sigma Kappa.
Sigma Kappa Elydia Foss Shipman, Alpha, never forgot her Colby roots and wrote about ‘pine trees on a hill’ in her poem “Memory”. She was the impetus for the first Sigma Kappa extension outside of Maine – the Delta Chapter at Boston University.
We introduce you to our White Pine Pinot Noir. From the Russian River Valley AVA of Sonoma County, this beautiful wine is influenced mostly by the fog of the AVA and is very aromatic, with a velvet mouthfeel, and has a fruit character that is ripe and intense.
The Sweetest Flower:
Named after a formal meeting song, “The Sweetest Flower” refers to the wild purple violet, which is the official flower of Sigma Kappa. The sweet-scented flower symbolizes truth and loyalty, while also embodying a sense of modesty, wisdom and humility. Our Founders enjoyed the wild purple violets that grew along the banks of the Messalonskee River where they often walked while planning and dreaming of Sigma Kappa.
We introduce you to The Sweetest Flower. This Chardonnay is a real gem. Hailing from the cool and foggy climate for the Russian River Valley in Sonoma County, this beautiful medium-bodied wine was grown slowly to build intense flavors over time. This wine was aged in French oak and displays a beautiful balance of fruit, oak and liveliness on the palate and exhibits lush mango and toasted almond. Balanced fruit with tarte acidity makes this wine a classic example of Premium Russian River Chardonnay.
Mary Low Carver:
A wine named in honor of Mary Low Carver is the first release in the First Five Series. These wines honor our five Founders and their desire to pave the way for thousands of women to come. We are grateful that these courageous women decided to make a place for women in the collegiate world. Their efforts inspired the formation of sororities on the basis of scholarship, friendship, mutual interests and ideals.
Mary Caffrey Low Carver was the first woman to attend Colby College, the first name added to the rolls of Sigma Kappa and first to preside at an Initiation. She was a brilliant student who graduated in July 1875 at 25. Mary was always interested in the future of Sigma Kappa. The early chapter members frequently consulted with her on everything from the selection of furniture to the decision to extend Sigma Kappa beyond Colby College. Mary was hard of hearing, but she read lips so quickly few recognized her deafness.
We introduce you to our First Five Series, featuring Mary Low Carver. This proprietary red blend – from our award-winning winemaker Todd Heth – exhibits dark blackberry, bing cherry and plum notes perfectly into layers of coffee and tobacco. The finish is dry with long lasting berry fruit. Silky but firm tannins, this wine is enjoyable now but has the ability to age well in the cellar.
