The second wine of the inaugural release, the 2019 In Hoc “The Sweetheart” Chardonnay, Carneros, Napa Valley, is carefully crafted from the fruit of the chalky soil and cooler climate of Carneros in southern Napa Valley. This wine was aged in French oak for fourteen months and displays a beautiful balance of fruit, oak, and liveliness on the palate.
The Sweetheart is the symbol of the spiritual ingredient in the brotherhood, and we hope this wine will be shared amongst friends and family in the same sentiment. This label showcases the iconic images of the sheet music of the Sigma Chi Sweetheart Song with the hat and flower.
This bottle is signed by Metta Krach, International Sweetheart 1997-1999 (UCLA - Kappa Kappa Gamma).
History:
Written in 1911 by two undergraduates at Albion College in Michigan, The Sweetheart of Sigma Chi has become the most popular college fraternity song in history. Byron Stokes, 1913, wrote the words one June day while in class. He took the words to his Sigma Chi Brother Dudleigh Vernor, 1914, who was practicing the organ in the campus chapel; Vernor completed the music that day. It was first sung by Harry Clifford, ALBION 1911, who designed the drawing on the original sheet music and published by Richard Vernor, ALBION 1913, brother of Dudleigh Vernor.
Stokes was asked by many people, "Who is the girl who was the inspiration?" He answered it was no one in particular. "The `Sweetheart' is the symbol of the spiritual ingredient in brotherhood. It was the Sigma Chi Fraternity itself that inspired the song. I wrote the words not long after my initiation, and the magic of our Ritual with its poetic overtones and undertones was, I suppose, the source of my inspiration."
