THE SCHOOL YARD:
I’ll meet you in the school yard, baby, for all the marbles! A sentence authored by Mike Lange seconds after the Penguins won Game 6 and forced a Game 7 in the 2009 Stanley Cup Final. The Penguins went on to win Game 7 and at the Championship Parade, Mike Lange took the stage, held up his hand, showed the crowd a bag and proudly proclaimed, “I got the marbles!”
We introduce you to THE SCHOOL YARD. Our Pinot Noir from Santa Barbara County experiences a lengthy and cool growing season that is similar to the climate of the Burgundy region of east-central France. Unlike Burgundy, our Pinot Noir experiences dense fog that rolls in off the Pacific Ocean; this fog contributes to the ideal climate for Pinot Noir, offering just enough moisture to be beneficial without lingering too long.
This Pinot Noir has aromas of cherries, raspberries, blackberries, and brown sugar with notes of baking spices. On the palate, the wine opens with bright, fruit flavors of strawberries, leading to a round mouthfeel on the mid-palate and soft, velvety tannins on a long, elegant finish.
Center Ice:
“Play without fear and you will be successful! See you at center ice.” That is the text message every player received on the morning of Game 7 in 2009 from team owner, Mario Lemieux. A proclamation that came to fruition hours later. And it’s been a meeting place ever since. Just a year later, the Penguins’ new arena was built on Centre Avenue. See you there.
We introduce you to Center Ice. Hailing from the cool and foggy climate for the Russian River Valley in Sonoma County, this beautiful medium-bodied wine was grown slowly to build intense flavors over time. This wine was aged in French oak and displays a beautiful balance of fruit, oak and liveliness on the palate and exhibits lush mango and toasted almond. Balanced fruit with tarte acidity makes this wine a classic example of Premium Russian River Chardonnay.
FIVE:
Five isn’t just a number, it signifies so much more. There are Five banners that hang from our rafters signifying our championship seasons. Those banners reside inside our building which sits on Fifth Avenue. A big reason those banners and that building exist is the 2005 NHL Draft. After winning the draft lottery that year, the Penguins selected Sidney Crosby. Let’s not forget before any of those, there were Five goals scored Five different ways, a feat that has only ever been accomplished once, by Mario Lemieux. And yes, 66 hangs from the rafters, alongside those other Five.
We introduce you to FIVE. This proprietary red blend – from our award-winning winemaker Todd Heth – exhibits dark blackberry, bing cherry, and plum notes perfectly into layers of coffee and tobacco. The finish is dry with long-lasting berry fruit. Silky but firm tannins, this wine is enjoyable now but has the ability to age well in the cellar.

Merci, Mario is a phrase that has been intertwined with the career of Mario Lemieux, in part because of his play on the ice, but also because of his save off of the ice, rescuing the team from bankruptcy and keeping them in Pittsburgh. Merci, meaning ‘Thank You’ in French, is an homage to the most important player in the history of our franchise as well as the legacy of French-Canadian players who have left a lasting impact on our team and city. We are all thankful for what we’ve been able to witness. Merci, indeed.

LOTTERY BALL:
After a lockout canceled the 2004-05 NHL Season, each team had a chance to win the first overall pick in the upcoming NHL Draft Lottery. High stakes, because a certain, once in a generation prodigy, was the undisputed top prospect in that year’s draft. The winning team would quite literally win the lottery. Certain the team wouldn’t win; Penguins owner Mario Lemieux was at a doctor’s appointment with his daughter when the ping pong ball bounced the Penguins way and they were awarded the first pick in the NHL Draft. After years of mediocrity, the future in Pittsburgh was bright and once Lemieux emerged from the doctor’s office, he knew that it was once again A Great Day for Hockey in Pittsburgh.
We introduce you to LOTTERY BALL. Our flagship Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is a classic representation of the appellation’s preeminent varietal. Notes of black cherry, blackberry and plum are complemented by hits of toasted oak, dried currant and baking spice. Fine-grained tannins and ample brightness on the palate give way to a polished mouthfeel and exceptionally long finish.
Fairwinds 2021 Rosé of Cabernet:
Our Rose of Cabernet 2021 hails from the Russian River Valley, offering a delightful expression of Cabernet Sauvignon in rosé form. Vibrant aromas of fresh strawberries and watermelon precede flavors of red berries and citrus zest. A crisp acidity and a hint of floral notes on the finish make this rosé a perfect companion for sunny days.
