In 1852, young students at Wesleyan College, the first institution to grant degrees to women, founded the Philomathean Society as a literary organization to support one another in their academic endeavors. The Philomathean Society became Phi Mu Fraternity in 1904. The spirit of the Philomatheans, and of our sisters always being there for one another, lives on in every Phi Mu.
