The Badge of Kappa Sigma Fraternity, as designed by Founder Edmund Law Rogers, Jr., exists today much the same as it did when it was first created in 1869.  Convex in shape bearing a five-pointed star circumscribed by a crescent moon, the first badge was crafted by Sadtler & Sons of Baltimore, Maryland and was worn on The Lawn at the University of Virginia in early 1870.  In its original form, white enamel was used to outline the letters Kappa and Sigma.  Later black enamel was adopted and is still used in badges produced today.  The Keys, Skull & Crossbones, and Swords represent subtle teachings of Kappa Sigma as known to all true and lawful members.  Precious jewels were added to further enhance the Star & Crescent as well as convey more historical significance and clues as to its origin.  Symbolism is present throughout the design, a testament to the skill and artistry of Founder Rogers.
