Wine Information:
Founders Red Wood:
On a cold December 21, 1865, young James Ward Wood gives a toast to the “two Williams” [William Nelson Scott and William Archibald Walsh] in Walsh’s room. With that simple act the idea for Kappa Alpha Order was born, and has since initiated more than 175,000 brothers. It is fitting that our inaugural Founders Red is named for Founder Wood.
In his honor, we introduce to you, James Ward Wood. This proprietary red blend – from our award-winning winemaker Todd Heth – exhibits dark blackberry, bing cherry and plum notes perfectly into layers of coffee and tobacco. The finish is dry with long lasting berry fruit. Silky but firm tannins, this wine is enjoyable now but has the ability to age well in the cellar.
Rampant:
The 18th Convention in 1895 directed the Knight Commander to create a Coat of Arms into a proper “achievement.” While the badge had always been the proper escutcheon, it was desired to add the appropriate components of heraldry, such as a scroll, motto, helmet, crest, coronet, foliage or wreath, and supporters. In 1897, Samuel Zenas Ammen refined a prior design by Charles Kirby King. Lions are common supporters in heraldry and may have different meanings according to their posture. Commonly they are either in a rampant pose, meaning magnanimous or have nobility of mind, or regardant, with a sense of being circumspect, cautious and watchful.
Rampant Pinot Noir is one of two in a pair of Excelsior Napa varietals highlighting our “supporters.” With magnanimous dark notes of rugged black fruits, it is plush and full bodied, making a long-lasting impression. It perfectly matches the rampant and magnanimous sense within us.
We introduce you to Rampant. This premium Pinot Noir is from the Russian River Valley AVA of Sonoma County. This beautiful wine is influenced mostly by the fog of the AVA and is very aromatic, with a velvet mouthfeel, and has a fruit character that is ripe and intense.
Old Gold:
In 1885, the Thirteenth Convention held in Nashville, Tennessee approved Crimson and Old Gold as the Order’s official colors. They represent the blood (Crimson) and treasure (Old Gold) spent by our forefathers in defense of our country. Our brotherhood is our treasure, and we know it is stronger than ever.
We introduce to you, Old Gold. From the chalky soil of the Carneros region in southern Napa Valley, this gem exhibits lush green apple and bright grapefruit notes while dancing across your palate. This stunning wine is light and friendly with very subtle vanilla and pear blossom hints on the nose. Balanced fruit with tarte acidity makes this wine a classic example of Premium Napa Chardonnay.
Excelsior:
The motto, Excelsior, reminds KAs to strive for excellence in all things and to never settle for mediocrity. What better name to make a KA proud and what better way to celebrate any great accomplishment than with a bottle bearing this brave device.
We introduce to you, Excelsior. This premium sparkling wine – meticulously and artfully made in the traditional champagne method – rivals anything found from the best Champagne houses in Épernay and Reims. Blended superbly from Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, this magnificent Napa Valley Brut exhibits rich fruit aromatics of strawberry and delicate white cherry that follows through to a creamy mid-palate accompanied with highlights of lime and wet minerality and a lingering vibrant finish.
