The 18th Convention in 1895 directed the Knight Commander to create a Coat of Arms into a proper “achievement.” While the badge had always been the proper escutcheon, it was desired to add the appropriate components of heraldry, such as a scroll, motto, helmet, crest, coronet, foliage or wreath, and supporters. In 1897, Samuel Zenas Ammen refined a prior design by Charles Kirby King. Lions are common supporters in heraldry and may have different meanings according to their posture. Commonly they are either in a rampant pose, meaning magnanimous or have nobility of mind, or regardant, with a sense of being circumspect, cautious and watchful.
Regardant Cabernet Sauvignon is one of two in a pair of Excelsior Napa varietals highlighting our “supporters.” With soft and silky notes of earth, spice, and lavender, it is a more elegant style varietal, perfect for the regardant sense within us.
We introduce you to our flagship Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, Regardant. This is a premium and classic representation of the appellation’s preeminent varietal. Notes of black cherry, blackberry and plum are complemented by hints of toasted oak, dried currant and baking spice. Fine-grained tannins and ample brightness on the palate give way to a polished mouthfeel and exceptionally long finish.
