Gold Star Heroes:
Scores of Pikes have served in our Nation’s wars with more than 600 brothers serving in Vietnam, with 81 making the ultimate sacrifice. The Fraternity’s Memorial Headquarters in Memphis, Tennessee, honors this gallant service with a Gold Star Heroes exhibit which includes the uniform of 2LT Paul H. Eklund (Linfield, Delta Rho ’61), who served in the U.S. Army in Company A, 1st Battalion, 18th Infantry, 1st Infantry Division in the Vietnam War. An Executive Officer, Brother Eklund was killed in action while engaged in a search-and-destroy mission near Bien Hoa, Vietnam on November 11, 1965. He was awarded the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, and Silver Star.
We introduce you to our flagship Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, Gold Star Heroes. This is a premium and classic representation of the appellation’s preeminent varietal. Notes of black cherry, blackberry and plum are complemented by hints of toasted oak, dried currant and baking spice. Fine-grained tannins and ample brightness on the palate give way to a polished mouthfeel and exceptionally long finish.
Diamond:
Our character should always be as pure as the peerless diamond, and just as the diamond blazes with the light of truth, our love for our brothers blazes on today. The tradition of drinking champagne to mark celebrations originated in the royal courts of Europe in the 18th century. This particular selection was created to celebrate the best of times with our brothers.
This premium sparkling wine – meticulously and artfully made in the traditional champagne method – rivals anything found from the best Champagne houses in Épernay and Reims. Blended superbly from Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, this magnificent Napa Valley Brut exhibits rich fruit aromatics of strawberry and delicate white cherry that follows through to a creamy mid-palate accompanied with highlights of lime and wet minerality and a lingering vibrant finish.
The Oak:
What an enduring and lasting monument is the oak. Toward the end of his life, founder William Alexander likened the Fraternity to this same symbol. “The spreading oak upon which we look today with wonder and pride could never have grown from the seed of any weed. Its character proves that it was a genuine acorn that was planted at the University of Virginia more than a half a century ago.” Alexander drew the mighty oak depicted on this label, with roots grown from the acorn of 1868 and branches covering more than fifteen decades.
From the chalky soil of the Carneros region in southern Napa Valley, this gem exhibits lush green apple and bright grapefruit notes while dancing across your palate. This stunning wine is light and friendly with very subtle vanilla and pear blossom hints on the nose. Balanced fruit with tarte acidity make this wine a classic example of Premium Napa Chardonnay.
Wicket Door:
The wicket door is a small, narrow entrance within a larger door or city gate, which serves to avoid the risk of opening the main gates to a castle or city for someone who has not yet been verified as a friend or stranger. We must always remember our duty to protect that which is most sacred to us from life outside the wicket door.
Our Pinot Noir from Santa Barbara County experiences a lengthy and cool growing season that is similar to the climate of the Burgundy region of east-central France. Unlike Burgundy, our Pinot Noir experiences dense fog that rolls in off the Pacific Ocean; this fog contributes to the ideal climate for Pinot Noir, offering just enough moisture to be beneficial without lingering too long.
Wicket Door has aromas of cherries, raspberries, blackberries, and brown sugar with notes of baking spices. On the palate, the wine opens with bright, fruit flavors of strawberries, leading to a round mouthfeel on the mid-palate and soft, velvety tannins on a long, elegant finish.
