The Tomb:
Fraternity members at Yale did not live in houses, but they met in “tombs”, which were large windowless lodges that had an air of mystery and secrecy surrounding them.
On March 27, 1907, members of a re-founding class of the Alpha Chapter traveled to Marietta College to be initiated. Many of the old Alpha members returned to Yale upon hearing the news of the refounding and helped acquire the fraternity’s first piece of real estate, the “Tomb”, a windowless two-story building. No non-member was allowed entrance. No member could speak of the interior of the building and was even expected to remain silent while passing by the exterior of the building.
We introduce you to The Tomb. Our flagship Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is a classic representation of the appellation’s preeminent varietal. Notes of of black cherry, blackberry and plum are complemented by hits of toasted oak, dried currant and baking spice. Fine-grained tannins and ample brightness on the palate give way to a polished mouthfeel and exceptionally long finish.
The Old Gal:
Alphred D. Follett (Marietta 1872) is credited with coining the term “The Old Gal” as an affectionate description for the Fraternity in a 1918 address: “If I were a sculptor, I would take a block of the whitest marble and carve it into the form of a beautiful woman. Before that statue, I would bow my head in token of my willingness to receive her instruction and bend my knee in token of my unswerving loyalty and undying fealty. I trust that if not the marble statue, at least the letters Alpha Sigma Phi, standing for the Fraternity, will be a constant inspiration to you after you are out and away from college. And as you come to address younger Sigs, you will be glad and proud to say that, to ‘The Old Gal’ you owe in great measure the good you have been able to do.”
We introduce you to The Old Gal, our Pinot Noir from Santa Barbara County experiences a lengthy and cool growing season that is similar to the climate of the Burgundy region of east-central France. Unlike Burgundy, our Pinot Noir experiences dense fog that rolls in off the Pacific Ocean; this fog contributes to the ideal climate for Pinot Noir, offering just enough moisture to be beneficial without lingering too long.
This Pinot Noir has aromas of cherries, raspberries, blackberries, and brown sugar with notes of baking spices. On the palate, the wine opens with bright, fruit flavors of strawberries, leading to a round mouthfeel on the mid-palate and soft, velvety tannins on a long, elegant finish.
