Wine Information:
Silence:
It is our belief that our values separate Alpha Sigs from other men. For the first 161 years of our existence as a brotherhood, the values that defined us were so shrouded in secrecy that they were only discussed during the Initiation Ceremony. At the 2006 Grand Chapter, the Brothers courageously broke with tradition and lifted the veil of secrecy under which our values had labored for too long. Through this knowledge, the world could hold us accountable for living up to the promise these values represent.
Our value of Silence teaches us that he has the strength to embrace silence and the will to build an interior life founded upon an honest desire to truly listen to others. Trust in silence transcends the gulf that is created when men feel the need to compete in action or rhetoric. He is introspective and self-reliant.
We introduce to you Silence. This premium sparkling wine – meticulously and artfully made in the traditional champagne method – rivals anything found from the best Champagne houses in Épernay and Reims. Blended superbly from Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, this magnificent Napa Valley Brut exhibits rich fruit aromatics of strawberry and delicate white cherry that follows through to a creamy mid-palate accompanied with highlights of lime and wet minerality and a lingering vibrant finish.
The Old Gal:
Alphred D. Follett (Marietta 1872) is credited with coining the term “The Old Gal” as an affectionate description for the Fraternity in a 1918 address: “If I were a sculptor, I would take a block of the whitest marble and carve it into the form of a beautiful woman. Before that statue, I would bow my head in token of my willingness to receive her instruction and bend my knee in token of my unswerving loyalty and undying fealty. I trust that if not the marble statue, at least the letters Alpha Sigma Phi, standing for the Fraternity, will be a constant inspiration to you after you are out and away from college. And as you come to address younger Sigs, you will be glad and proud to say that, to ‘The Old Gal’ you owe in great measure the good you have been able to do.”
We introduce you to The Old Gal, our Pinot Noir from Santa Barbara County experiences a lengthy and cool growing season that is similar to the climate of the Burgundy region of east-central France. Unlike Burgundy, our Pinot Noir experiences dense fog that rolls in off the Pacific Ocean; this fog contributes to the ideal climate for Pinot Noir, offering just enough moisture to be beneficial without lingering too long.
This Pinot Noir has aromas of cherries, raspberries, blackberries, and brown sugar with notes of baking spices. On the palate, the wine opens with bright, fruit flavors of strawberries, leading to a round mouthfeel on the mid-palate and soft, velvety tannins on a long, elegant finish.
Twin Roses:
The original flower of Alpha Sigma Phi was the cardinal rose, symbolizing the deep and abiding friendships fostered within the mystic circle. The flower of Alpha Kappa Pi was the yellow tea rose, symbolic of the fragrance and the purity of life that is lived in honor and fair dealing with our fellow man.
Alpha Kappa Pi and Alpha Sigma Phi joined to become one Fraternity. We bind the cardinal rose and the yellow tea rose together with the colors of the fraternity – Cardinal and Stone – forming twin roses of Alpha Sigma Phi. Together the roses are a symbol of endless life and emblematic of the continuing vitality and heritage of our fraternity.
We introduce to you Twin Roses. From the chalky soil of the Carneros region in southern Napa Valley, this gem exhibits lush green apple and bright grapefruit notes while dancing across your palate. This stunning wine is light and friendly with very subtle vanilla and pear blossom hints on the nose. Balanced fruit with tarte acidity makes this wine a classic example of Premium Napa Chardonnay.
The Tomb:
Fraternity members at Yale did not live in houses, but they met in “tombs”, which were large windowless lodges that had an air of mystery and secrecy surrounding them.
On March 27, 1907, members of a re-founding class of the Alpha Chapter traveled to Marietta College to be initiated. Many of the old Alpha members returned to Yale upon hearing the news of the refounding and helped acquire the fraternity’s first piece of real estate, the “Tomb”, a windowless two-story building. No non-member was allowed entrance. No member could speak of the interior of the building and was even expected to remain silent while passing by the exterior of the building.
We introduce you to The Tomb. Our flagship Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is a classic representation of the appellation’s preeminent varietal. Notes of of black cherry, blackberry and plum are complemented by hits of toasted oak, dried currant and baking spice. Fine-grained tannins and ample brightness on the palate give way to a polished mouthfeel and exceptionally long finish.
