Wine Information:

Wicket Door:

The wicket door is a small, narrow entrance within a larger door or city gate, which serves to avoid the risk of opening the main gates to a castle or city for someone who has not yet been verified as a friend or stranger. We must always remember our duty to protect that which is most sacred to us from life outside the wicket door.

We introduce you to Wicket Door. Our Pinot Noir from Santa Barbara County experiences a lengthy and cool growing season that is similar to the climate of the Burgundy region of east-central France. Unlike Burgundy, our Pinot Noir experiences dense fog that rolls in off the Pacific Ocean; this fog contributes to the ideal climate for Pinot Noir, offering just enough moisture to be beneficial without lingering too long.

Wicket Door has aromas of cherries, raspberries, blackberries, and brown sugar with notes of baking spices. On the palate, the wine opens with bright, fruit flavors of strawberries, leading to a round mouthfeel on the mid-palate and soft, velvety tannins on a long, elegant finish.

The Oak:

Toward the end of his life, founder William Alexander likened Pi Kappa Alpha to the oak and drew the image depicted on this label, with roots grown from the acorn of 1868 and branches covering more than fifteen decades. A fair comparison: the oak holds the earth together against winds, waters, and storms on the southern coast of our country; in the East, it covers acre after acre; in the West, it dominates the landscape. The strength of the oak has come to represent the hearts of true men.

We introduce you to The Oak. The second release of “The Oak” Chardonnay is a real gem. Hailing from the cool and foggy climate for the Russian River Valley in Sonoma County, this beautiful medium-bodied wine was grown slowly to build intense flavors over time. This wine was aged in French oak and displays a beautiful balance of fruit, oak and liveliness on the palate and exhibits lush mango and toasted almond. Balanced fruit with tarte acidity makes this wine a classic example of Premium Russian River Chardonnay.

Legacy:

Legacy is the second release in The Founders series, which honors the six men that together established the brotherhood that still lives on today. Born William Bradford, Littleton Waller Tazewell changed his name to preserve the memory of his maternal grandfather, a beloved governor of Virginia. He lived in 47 West Range with his cousin, Frederick Southgate Taylor. Tazewell was the first beneficiary of family introducing family into the bonds of phi phi kappa alpha. After graduation, he went on to become a successful businessman and was prominent in public life. The Fraternity’s first legacy, Tazewell earned that title in his own right by the manner in which he lived his life and spread his radiance through the hearts of our brothers.

We introduce you to Legacy. The 2019 Founders Red Wine is an artful red blend created by winemaker Todd Heth. This wine exhibits dark blackberry, bing cherry and plum notes perfectly into layers of coffee and tobacco. The finish is dry with long lasting berry fruit. Silky but firm tannins, this wine is enjoyable now but has the ability to age well in the cellar. The second bottling honors the wisdom of Founder Thomas Cowan Bell.

Diamond:

Our character should always be as pure as the peerless diamond, and just as the diamond blazes with the light of truth, our love for our brothers blazes on today. The tradition of drinking champagne to mark celebrations originated in the royal courts of Europe in the 18th century. This particular selection was created to celebrate the best of times with our brothers.

We introduce you to Diamond. This premium sparkling wine – meticulously and artfully made in the traditional champagne method – rivals anything found from the best Champagne houses in Épernay and Reims. Blended superbly from Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, this magnificent Napa Valley Brut exhibits rich fruit aromatics of strawberry and delicate white cherry that follows through to a creamy mid-palate accompanied with highlights of lime and wet minerality and a lingering vibrant finish.

47:

Room 47, West Range was at the outer limit of Mr. Jefferson’s “academical village” at the University of Virginia. Heated by a wood fire, it opened onto an arcade that ran the length of the Range. On the evening on Sunday, March 1, 1868, a small group of young men from different backgrounds met in this room to form a brotherhood that would span generations and the world. It is because of this night that “47” will always mean something special to brothers of Pi Kappa Alpha.

We introduce you to 47. Our flagship Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is a classic representation of the appellation’s preeminent varietal. Notes of of black cherry, blackberry and plum are complemented by hits of toasted oak, dried currant and baking spice. Fine-grained tannins and ample brightness on the palate give way to a polished mouthfeel and exceptionally long finish.

The Shield and Diamond:

The shield and diamond are central designs in the Fraternity’s earliest badging. This iconography was translated into the name of the Fraternity’s early communications. First published in 1890 by Robert Adger Smythe, the Shield & Diamond magazine is today an award-winning publication that tells the stories of Pikes around the world. The magazine serves as a historical record of the Fraternity’s growth and success. From powerful stories of brothers making a difference to the achievements of our chapters, the Shield & Diamond captures the Fraternity’s impact in the lives of our members, alumni, and supporters. Akin to the unique blending process of a fine, rare Rose wine, the Shield & Diamond represents our Fraternity’s unique story. The label contains the masthead from the October 1929 issue.

We introduce you to The Shield and Diamond, our 2021 Rosé of Cabernet Sauvignon. The watermelon and strawberry notes burst out of the glass. When served cool on a warm day, the juicy acidity of the 2021 Rosé makes for a very refreshing and versatile wine, perfect to share on any occasion. Look for the hidden imagery in the rose petals.
