Wine Information:
White Pine:
Maine, the founding place of Sigma Kappa Sorority, is known as The Pine Tree State. The eastern white pine is the official tree and is tall and hardy, some living over 200 years, and exhibiting a sturdiness and longevity shared by Sigma Kappa herself. We can imagine our Founders sitting beneath the shade of the white pine on sunny Maine days discussing the creation of Sigma Kappa.
Sigma Kappa Elydia Foss Shipman, Alpha, never forgot her Colby roots and wrote about ‘pine trees on a hill’ in her poem “Memory”. She was the impetus for the first Sigma Kappa extension outside of Maine – the Delta Chapter at Boston University.
We introduce you to our White Pine Pinot Noir. From the Russian River Valley AVA of Sonoma County, this beautiful wine is influenced mostly by the fog of the AVA and is very aromatic, with a velvet mouthfeel, and has a fruit character that is ripe and intense.
1874 Reserve:
Sigma Kappa’s story began in 1874. At Colby College in Waterville, Maine, our courageous Founders bonded together as the first women admitted to college in New England. They were boldly determined to carve out a place in what had traditionally been a space reserved for men. The trail they blazed inspired the formation of sororities on the basis of scholarship, friendship, mutual interests and ideals. Here’s to Mary Low, Elizabeth Hoag, Ida Mabel Fuller, Louise Coburn and Frances Mann who created a better environment for future generations of women.
We introduce you to our flagship Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, 1874 Reserve. This is a premium and classic representation of the appellation’s preeminent varietal. Notes of black cherry, blackberry and plum are complemented by hints of toasted oak, dried currant and baking spice. Fine-grained tannins and ample brightness on the palate give way to a polished mouthfeel and exceptionally long finish.
The Sweetest Flower:
Named after a formal meeting song, “The Sweetest Flower” refers to the wild purple violet, which is the official flower of Sigma Kappa. The sweet-scented flower symbolizes truth and loyalty, while also embodying a sense of modesty, wisdom and humility. Our Founders enjoyed the wild purple violets that grew along the banks of the Messalonskee River where they often walked while planning and dreaming of Sigma Kappa.
We introduce to you The Sweetest Flower. This Chardonnay is a real gem. Hailing from the cool and foggy climate for the Russian River Valley in Sonoma County, this beautiful medium-bodied wine was grown slowly to build intense flavors over time. This wine was aged in French oak and displays a beautiful balance of fruit, oak and liveliness on the palate and exhibits lush mango and toasted almond. Balanced fruit with tarte acidity makes this wine a classic example of Premium Russian River Chardonnay.
